Assistive Technology
The type of Assistive Technology recommended is dependent the level of dysregulation being experienced. For those who are highly dysregulated, triggered easily into a survival state of fight-flight-freeze-fawn, the Safe and Sound Protocol is a necessary starting point. This intervention primes the brain, promoting readiness to recognise safety, cope with feelings of safety (it might sound strange but for those who have lived with chronic stress, feelings of calm are often alien, and can therefore trigger anxiety and panic), and begin to initiate and strengthen connections in the brain which allow further development of self-regulation. For those who are not yet able to self-calm but have sufficient self-regulatory capacity to be guided to don wearbles, Touchpoints are the ideal tool. Calming through bi-lateral alternating micro-vibrations, the brain is stimulated gently back into a state or calm and relaxation. For those who have the self-regulatory capacity to remain calm and thus keep their learning brain online, are ready to develop self-calming strategies such as deep-breathing techniques, such as those developed through the process of biofeedback playing the fun, educational game, Champions of the Shengha.
Safe and Sound ProtocolA foundation intervention preparing the brain to recognise safety, promoting social-engagement and the ability to be more successful in learning and implementing self-regulation strategies. For students who are highly dysregulated, this is a critical first intervention.
